DRUG/OVI ENFORCEMENT & EDUCATION

Trotwood’s OVI Enforcement program enforces State, and local “Operating a Motor Vehicle under the Influence of Drugs and or Alcohol” laws. Its job is to educate the public to reduce the occurrences of OVI violations and crashes. Particular emphasis is given to teaching youth about the dangers of alcohol abuse through such methods as anti-drunk driving courses.

The Police Department is an active member of the Montgomery County OVI Task Force and participates in the Statewide HVEO-High Visibility Enforcement Overtime Program. Both of these programs provide State and Federal funding to cover overtime expenses to allow officers to address OVI enforcement. Through the assistance of the Task Force, the department conducts two (2) OVI Checkpoints yearly.

In other areas, the department partners with the Ohio Department of Liquor Control and conducts periodic Tobacco and Alcohol Sale Compliance Checks on local vendors.

In April 2011, the department completed Training and Implementation of a new Intoxilyzer Testing Station in the department. The Equipment was purchased through a JAG- Justice Assistance Grant in 2010 and Training was paid through the Department’s OVI Education & Enforcement Fund. The new Testing Station allows officers to complete their investigations more efficiently and in house rather than relying on other agencies to provide the testing.

The City’s Drug Enforcement program is dedicated to decreasing drug abuse incidents and sales in the community. Its primary task revolves around sending a clear message about how seriously it takes the “War On Drugs”. The department has officers dedicated to the Local DEA Task Force and the Montgomery County “Regional Agencies Narcotics & Gun Enforcement” (RANGE) Task Force.

Drug Enforcement officers’ responsibilities include:
• taking big-time and small-time dealers and users off the street
• investigating possible activities including abuse, dealing, cultivation, and development of illegal drugs
• conducting undercover operations, including purchasing narcotics and “sting” operations
