12.17.10- Vectren Weatherizing 500 Homes For Free
In an effort to help customers further increase efficient use of natural gas, Vectren Energy Delivery of Ohio (Vectren) has issued a call for applicants for its Project TEEM (Teaching Energy Efficiency Measures) program, which provides free home weatherization services to customers in its Ohio service territory.
This unique program will weatherize around 500 homes of Vectren customers whose household income is between 200 and 300 percent of federal poverty guidelines. For a family of four, this percentage equates to a household income between $44,000 and $66,000. Qualifying customers will be served on a first-come, first-serve basis.
To apply for Vectren’s Project TEEM, contact the Community Action Partnership of the Greater Dayton Area at (800) 617-2673 or visit www.vectren.com for more information.
“Expanding the Project TEEM income guidelines to those between 200 and 300 percent of federal poverty guidelines has allowed us to reach customers that have never qualified for these types of programs and help them realize the benefits of weatherization,” said Carl Chapman, Vectren’s president and CEO. “This program allows many working families to upgrade appliances, reduce energy usage and reduce energy bills for the long-term.”
Those who qualify for Project TEEM will receive a free, on-site home energy audit to determine areas in need of energy-efficiency upgrades. Energy efficiency experts from the Community Action Partnership of the Greater Dayton Area will then implement a number of efficiency measures on an as-needed basis, which may include: adding insulation in the walls or attic, sealing ductwork and air leaks, installing high-efficiency natural gas furnaces, etc. The average home will receive around $5,000 in improvements, all at no cost to the customer.
Each year, more than $2 million goes to fund the Project TEEM initiative. Around $1.1 million is earmarked toward traditional low-income customers who are at or below 200 percent of federal poverty guidelines, and the remaining $1 million is allocated for families who are between 200 and 300 percent of federal poverty guidelines. Families in this higher income range typically do not qualify for existing state and federal home weatherization programs.
“Since Project TEEM’s inception in 2005, we’ve weatherized more than 2,300 homes in the Miami Valley,” added Chapman. “More importantly, these weatherization services have helped homeowners reduce energy usage by as much as 25 percent and dramatically lower bills.”
