10.25.11- Road Levy Renewal on the 11/08 Ballot

On November 8th, Trotwood citizens will be asked to approve Issue 33 – a 1.0-mil Roadway Levy Renewal for maintaining the community’s roadways. This levy was originated in 1989 and continues to generate funds at the 1989 rate. Which means No Tax Increase for residents.

For the City’s Public Works Department/Roadway Division, the cost of doing business has been continuously rising. That’s due to inflation, as well as the skyrocketing costs of fuel (gasoline and crude oil), paving materials and road salt. And because of its aging vehicles and equipment, the costs of maintaining its fleet are also rapidly rising.

Public Works’ Roadway Division consists of one (1) Crew Leader six (6) employees. Their job is to maintain the community’s 410 lane miles, which includes snow/ice removal, patching potholes, removing trash and dead animals, roadside grass cutting/tree trimming and many other duties.

Trotwood citizens might be surprised to know where and how their Property Taxes are spent: 52.5% goes to the Trotwood-Madison City Schools; 23.2% to Montgomery County; 18.9 to City of Trotwood General Fund Levies; 2.4% to the Miami Valley CTC; 2.0% to the Trotwood Library – but only 1.0% for City of Trotwood Roadway Levies.

The fact is, well-maintained roads mean safe travel for emergency vehicles (Police and Fire/EMS vehicles) and citizens. They equal increased property values for citizens and businesses. And they increase the City’s ability to attract more economic development projects and businesses.
