After months of study, the U.S. Postal Service has decided not to close two post office stations in Dayton and Trotwood.
The Paul Laurence Dunbar station in Dayton’s Westown Shopping Center and Trotwood’s lone post office, at 34 Beardsley Road, had been among 3,600 branches considered for closure as the Postal Service adjusts to lower mail volume and budget deficits.
Postal Service spokesman David Van Allen said those two sites will not be closed in the current round of consolidations, but he said that doesn’t mean they’re safe in future years.
“We determined it wasn’t feasible to close those two at this time,” Van Allen said. “We couldn’t put them in another building we own, and we aren’t going to buy new facilities. Mail volume has dropped at those locations, but they’ll remain open.”
Dayton and Trotwood residents collected thousands of signatures this year in support of keeping those branches open, and several local city councils passed resolutions of support.
“The community spoke loudly and we’re so pleased that the Postal Service listened,” said Bruce Kettelle, who led the effort to save the Trotwood post office.
Van Allen said four other post offices being considered for closure are still under review. Those are the Dayton VA Medical Center and North Dayton branches, plus two at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
