06.25.11- Sheriff Donates $1,500 to Trotwood Youth Golf Camp

Mayor Joyce Cameron invited a special guest to the opening day of her second golf camp for kids last week.

It was Montgomery County Sheriff Phil Plummer, and he brought a rather large gift – a $1,500 check to help fund Cameron’s camp.

“It’s from our PAL (Police Athletic League) fund,” said Plummer.

Plummer helped sponsor a Trotwood SAY soccer team in the past and pledged to do so again.

The camp, open to children 2 to 12 from any municipality, runs six weeks (except July 4), from 10 a.m. to noon on Mondays.

Carl Johnson teaches the class, and he’s plenty good to do so.

Applications
Johnson, who works at Home Depot, is a 2-handicapper at Madden and showed his long-drive ability for the first-week kids.

Last year, 70 signed up for the class. Now, there are more than 100.

“It’s great to see the kids out here and not home playing video games,” said Johnson, who graduated from Trotwood High School in 1979 and learned how to play the game from his cousin, former Ohio State football great Keith Byars.

“Now, I play in tournaments all the time,” Johnson said. “It’s not just golf, it’s life.”
