12.22.11- Message from the State Fire Marshal

Over the Holidays everyone should make sure not to let safety take a holiday. Nearly 60% of the residential fires in Ohio in December are cooking related. In 2011 cooking was among the leading causes of fire fatalities.

Practice safe cooking habits throughout the holidays and into 2012 by not leaving the oven and stove unattended, and never cook when you are tired or impaired.

Also remember that holiday decorations such as Christmas trees pose special risks this time of year. Most live or cut Christmas tree fires happen on or after New Year's Day. So please remove the trees from your home as soon as possible following holiday celebrations.
