Fire/EMS Grant Increasing Safety
With the ultimate safety of its personnel foremost in mind, the City’s Fire/EMS Department recently applied for and received a $248,750 FEMA Fire Act Grant. Part of this grant will be used to purchase 74 sets of Structural Firefighting Gear or ‘Turnouts’, the protective clothing worn during structural fires or rescues. When not in use the turnouts are kept ready by ‘turning out’ the pants over the boots, which saves precious time since Firefighter/Paramedics are typically expected to don their equipment is about a minute.
The remainder of the grant will allow for the purchase of 20 Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), each of which has a high-pressure air tank, mask, and Personal Alert Safety System device. Unlike underwater SCUBA gear, these tanks are worn with the regulator valve facing down to protect it from being damaged while working in a tight areas or crawling along floors. The SCBA mask features a positive pressure flow to ensure that smoke and toxic gasses cannot penetrate it.
The City’s new firehouse at 5469 Little Richmond Road has already proven highly beneficial to daily operations and firefighter/paramedic training. Citizens are encouraged to visit the facility for a personal tour and to meet the firefighter/paramedics who stand ready at a moment’s notice to serve them.
